Post Number 10 of the NYC Food Adventure

This night I decided I needed more sushi so I went back to Ooki Sushi. I was not disappointed. I again had the whole Aji sushi and shashimi, absolutely delicisous.

In addition I tried some of their rolls. The Ooki Roll, and the Spicy Yellowtail Roll. I do not remember what was in each one (you can check the menu online), but the spicy roll was kinda bland, really tastly just not very spicy.

One thing I did make note of this time was that the sushi did not come with wassabi. This time I ordered more King Salmon, and Eel, neither had any wasabi, but they were both very good. Another good rathing for Ooki Sushi.

Next Meal: UNKNOWN!

Blah blah blah, on going series, post 8 and 9 together, blah blah.

Today is a redo as I again had breakfast at the Corrado Bread and Bakery and again had lunch at Sopie’s Cuban Cuisine. Neither one failed to live up to me high expectations.

I had the usual in the morning: coffee, apple danish, and a almond croissant. Why I need the second is pastry is simple, both are delicious and I cannot decide between the them.

Every day at Sopie’s they have different specials, neither appealed to me particularly so I ordered the grilled chicken with beans and rice, which came smothered in yummy onions and peppers. This was great just like yesterdays meal. My only complaint is that the chicken was slightly dry and the portion of beans was light. The rice portion was huge, but the bean were not. I would have liked less rice and more beans. I like beans. Yummy beans.

Sala Thai Restaurant

1718 2nd Ave New York, NY 10128 (212) 410-5557 http://salathaidc.com(not the correct site)

When I found this restaurant via the google maps I quickly looked at all the reviews it had gotten. It seems that Sala started out awesome went and went downhill recently and then began to right itself. My experience reenforces this idea. While the food was pretty great the service as pretty bad. They seemed to have four people on waitstaff, one being the hostess who was hopefully on the phone taking orders and not just gabbing away to her friends. The other three waiters seemed to run about aimlessly. When we did get our order taking they were nice enough they just seemed to have to much on their minds to give really good service.

As I said before the food itself was quite good. I had the chile pork which was very spicy fried pork in a sweet sauce with greens. The chicken disk I ordered was also very good, with a Thai coconut curry sauce. The rice portions were small but they gave us more for no extra charge.

I rate this as very tasty but it is not for you if you are in a hurry or a real stickler for good service.

Next Meal: Breky

Bummer no breky today.
Sophie’s Restaurant

75 New St New York, NY 10004 (212) 809-7755 http://sophiescuban.com

Lets just start off by saying that Sopie’s is delicious. You get way more food than you can eat and it is all delicious. My lizard brain almost made me devoir the whole plate and lick it clean but I had my un-fat pants on so the high order brain functions won out. I had one of the Tuesday specials, Beef stew with rice and beans. The stew consisted of 3 large chunks or slow cooked beef in a sauce of tomatoes, corn, green beans and spices. You could tell that the meat had cooked in a braise ahead of time and not in the stew itself. The meat was tender and easily cut but firm enough to hold itself together. This happens when after the meat is braised it is allowed to cool, overnight maybe, and then added back a sauce/stew. The cooling lets the gelatin in the meat firm up and hold meat together. Yummy yummy chunks of meat. Oh, the beans and rice were good too.

I rate this a very good, very filling lunch enough for 2 mortal people for less $15 .

Next meal dinner!

Part of my 19 part series documenting all my meal in NYV during my visit.

Ooki Sushi

1575 3rd Ave New York, NY 10128(212) 828-3388

I know I had Japanese food for lunch but I hate eating alone and I felt that sitting at the sushi bar would let me sit and talk with the sushi chef and the other patrons. Unfortunately, I was the first sushi bar patron of the night. This did not stop me though, as I was promptly greeted by all manor of helpful and attractive waitstaff. The while aji was recommended as was the king mackerel. Both were awesome. The aji was a while fish, about 13 inches long. I was filleted and prepared as both nigiri and shashimi with a citrus ponzu sauce. The fish was mild but with a slightly stringer fish flavor than the much more mild yellowtail or salmon. Oh, I also had baby yellowtail and salmon nigiri sushi, also freakin tasty. Finally I had what was called a BBQ squid. It was a whole squid about 12 inches and fat. The tentacles where slightly dry and quite tough, the body/rings where almost perfectly done, and the very light not very sweet terriyaki sauce was a nice touch.

About the images. This was by far the prettiest meal so far and yet I gave no images at all. I was tired of lugging my camera all over town and even though it was only 1 1/2 blocks to Ooki I did not bring it as I thought the cell phone camera would suffice. Well, it did not. My battery died just as I tried to document the awesome sight of the aji.

I would rate this as a very good meal. The prices where not cheap but if you factor in the great service, quality, and atmosphere, it becomes quite reasonable.

Next meal: Breky!

Kokura Japanese Restaurant

19 S William St New York, NY 10004 (212) 482-8888

I was in the mood for some soup for lunch so I decided on udon at a place a few feet from the building where I have class. I had the tempura udon (cell phone pic coming soon despite remembering to take the picture after I had already eaten half my meal).

When I first walked in I was worried, it was noon in the business district and I imagined that most restaurants in this part of town do 80-100% of their business for lunch, Kokura was empty I was the only patron. I suppose it was not difficult as I was the only person there, regardless, I received very good service, including a nice hot towel for my hands.

The udon and tempura came out wicked hot. The tempura was tasty and included shrimp, sweet potato, and broccoli. The soup had udon noodles, of course, spinach, napa cabbage, onions, and mushrooms. The broth was fine, not too salty, but a little thin on flavor.

I rate this as a utilitarian meal a little on the expensive side for what you get.

Next meal: Dinner!

Corrado Bread and Bakery

1361 Lexington Avenue @ 90th Street 212-348-8943 http://www.corradobread.com/

Ordered black coffee, apple danish, almond croissant. Drank coffee, devoured almond croissant. Saved the apple danish to take it ‘s picture. It may be worse for ware by the time I take the picture. On second thought I wil eat it right now and buy a new one take a picture of it and then eat it too. The croissant was light, flaky, and contained the perfect amount of a tasty almond flavored cream. Corrado does not only make pastries that taste good, they make them beautiful as well. The fruit danish are very cute, for lack of a more manly term, and are shaped like the fruit they contain.

I rate this as a damn tasty sweet breakfast. I am sure they have savory items as well but I favor sweet pastries in the morning.

Next meal: lunch!

Roma’s Pizza

1598 3rd Ave , on the corner 3rd and 88th.

Pizza Delivery, This was you run of the mill pizza. Nothing special. Nothing Great. If you do not really like spicy pizza steer clear of the buffallo chicken topping and stick with the Hawaiian. This was not Canadian bacon type Hawaiian, just regular boring ham.The crust was OK, the cheese was melty the pineapple was canned.

I would rate this meal as ‘utilitarian’. Nothing great, just semi-tasty filling-nutritive grub.

You may not know this but it is really not easy to take an attractive picture of pizza in a pizza box. I should clarify that it was harder than pointing the camera into the box and firing a bounce flash of the ceiling. I was far to hungry to anything more involved than that.

Next Meal: Desert! or Breakfast. We are undecided.

I have decided to do I short blog post about each of the food places I eat at this week while I am in NYC for training. There is the potential for 19 food posts!

Falafel House 2nd Ave between 91st and 92nd.

Order: Chicken shwarma sandwich and the falafel appetizer.

The sandwich was quite tasty. The chicken was moist white meat. It came with a pickled red cabbage slaw, lettuce, tomato, tahini, and some kind of spicy sauce. At first, I wished that the falafel would have had some kind of sauce, however, my first bite made it obvious these did not need sauce. They were crispy on the outside and moist enough inside to make the sauce unnecessary. The texture was rough and crunchy inside the ingredients were not powdery or completely pulverized making them light and airy rather then dense or heavy. I will definitely go back, it is a quick walk there from Chris’s place and was tasty and filling for under $10.

I did not think of doing this post until after I had eaten the entire sandwich and Chris and I had finished off the falafel. In later posts I will try to take some decent food shots, this is a photo blog after all.
